Cross-channel correlations in tetrode recordings: implications for spike-sorting

چکیده
We are exploring new methods of spike detection to improve spike-sorting in tetrode recordings. Based on our observation that the four channels of the tetrode carry highly correlated signals, we propose the use of a hyperellipsoidal thresholding surface in the 4-dimensional space of the signal values to detect spikes. This surface is determined by the cross-channel covariance matrix and provides a better approximation of the equiprobable surface of the noise amplitude distribution compared to the traditionally used hypercubical thresholding surface. This spike detection procedure greatly improves Rebrik, Wright, & Miller. Cross channel correlations in tetrode recordings. Page 2 of 8 the separation of signal clusters from the noise cluster around the origin. We have extended these approaches to automatic spike-sorting in both amplitude and full waveform spaces.

Response Properties of Neighboring Neurons in the Auditory Midbrain
The inferior colliculus, the primary nucleus in the mammalian auditory midbrain, occupies a central position in the ascending auditory pathway. Nearly all ascending neural pathways converge and synapse in the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus (ICC). Further, the anatomical arrangement of axons and neurons in the ICC suggests the existence of functional regions which may play a role in ...
متن کاملSorting Overlapping Spike Waveforms from Electrode and Tetrode Recordings
One of the outstanding problems in the sorting of neuronal spike trains is the resolution of overlapping spikes. Resolving these spikes can significantly improve a range of analyses, such as response variability, correlation, and latency. In this paper, we describe a partially automated method that is capable of resolving overlapping spikes. After constructing template waveforms for well-isolat...
متن کاملAccuracy of tetrode spike separation as determined by simultaneous intracellular and extracellular measurements.
Simultaneous recording from large numbers of neurons is a prerequisite for understanding their cooperative behavior. Various recording techniques and spike separation methods are being used toward this goal. However, the error rates involved in spike separation have not yet been quantified. We studied the separation reliability of "tetrode" (4-wire electrode)-recorded spikes by monitoring simul...
متن کاملSpike sorting of synchronous spikes from local neuron ensembles.
Synchronous spike discharge of cortical neurons is thought to be a fingerprint of neuronal cooperativity. Because neighboring neurons are more densely connected to one another than neurons that are located further apart, near-synchronous spike discharge can be expected to be prevalent and it might provide an important basis for cortical computations. Using microelectrodes to record local groups...
متن کاملModel-based spike sorting with a mixture of drifting t-distributions
BACKGROUND Chronic extracellular recordings are a powerful tool for systems neuroscience, but spike sorting remains a challenge. A common approach is to fit a generative model, such as a mixture of Gaussians, to the observed spike data. Even if non-parametric methods are used for spike sorting, such generative models provide a quantitative measure of unit isolation quality, which is crucial for...
